Meningitis is due to inflammation of the covering of the brain and nervous tissue.

It can occur after being infected by types of bacteria called Meningococci.

There are several types of Meningococci but the common ones are Men A, B, C, W, Y.

Meningitis B causes the majority of meningitis disease in the UK.

These bacterial can live in the nasal passages of children, adults but especially young adults who can spread them by coughing and sneezing.

The Infection can cause significant complications and even death (Approx 5-10% of cases).

Complications can be permanent and include hearing loss, memory issues, seizures and limb amputations.

The highest risk occurs in very young children and then young adults.

The NHS offers a free vaccination called Bexsero to new borns at 8weeks, 16 weeks and 1 year after birth.

For those not vaccinated, two vaccines 2 months apart over the age of 2 or 2 vaccines 1 month apart of an adult.

The vaccine is highly effective and protects up to 94% against the strains it is meant to.
